NASDAQ Returns by Month Spreadsheet

Here is a spreadsheet which allows you to see how much the the NASDAQ returned broken down by month (from February 1971 to current month to date June 2009). The average for July is 0.8%. To make this easy to find the average you can use Excel's sort feature. Once the spreadsheet is downloaded, click highlight the "date" box on the spreadsheet, click the "sort and filter" button from menu, choose "filter", the date box becomes a drop down menu, click to drop the menu down, choose "date filters", then "all dates in the period" and choose your month. You'll then be able to select the box below % change and average the returns.
